First Meeting

Sitting in the silence, when the phone tone rings
Can it be my Sweetheart and contact that it brings?
Will it end the silence bringing me some news?
And then You ask the question: “Which door shall I use?”
What Joy, Delight and Pleasure! My mind begins to spin
My own Beloved Treasure, My Sweetheart enters in!
I reach to hold You to me, but don’t for fear You’ll go
I wonder “Am I dreaming?” because I want You so
Three long years I’ve waited, wanting You so much
The waiting now has ended You’re near enough to touch

Into the sitting room now, I’m too confused to think
Or know what I should say now, and so I make a drink
You say your brother brought You and that he now is gone
He saw You to my doorway and then he carried on
So You are left, abandoned, trusted to my care
Trusting my good nature and all the love we share
Oh Sweetheart! How You doubted and feared I’d say “Begone”
Whilst all my doubts departed now we at last were one!
No question of You leaving, I begged You please to stay
No thought of You departing. No, please don’t go away!

The love we had just blossomed, grew greater day by day
And though I took You back there You couldn’t stay away
“Will you come and fetch me? For I am on the train
To Nottingham” Of course dear! No need to ask again
We shewed the ring to Andrew, to Dad to Margaret too
Surprise and approbation, for every one loved You!
Our marriage date came forward, eight months, three months, three weeks
As love accelerated, and anticipation peaked
My turn then for meetings, when I took You home
Your father, brother, daughter, then I returned alone

Bereft and separated, how could I leave You there?
In misery I maundered sitting in my chair
We’d each to make arrangements, to set our wedding date
To confirm and make quite certain that we could celebrate
And when I said I’d done it, for You had done yours first
You said You now believed it, your doubts had been dispersed
Now no more separation, why should we stay apart?
You called and said You loved me but You were sore at heart
And so I started driving and called You from my car
To say that I was coming, your Sweetheart from afar

Though I gave the streets their names as I neared your own
Thinking I could let you know how near I was by phone
When I came to Homelea Road, arriving there at night
You didn’t know just where I was ’till I came into sight
And then we spent a busy day with many folk to see
The school, the florists and the shops, Adam at HMV
How good at last to pack the car and set out on our way
With lovely Sarah in the back, that really made my day!
What a lovely girl she is, polite and sweet and bright
And so we have our family and Oh does that feel right!

And now I have my own green bear, a lovely emerald hue
The one I really fell wanted was saved for me by You
Oh what a lovely gesture! But so our love has grown
Such love that two must share, for its more than one can own
And now at last we’re happy, our future filled with hope
Instead of all the heartache with which we tried to cope
We Love! We love each other! We share a love that grows
A love that’s getting bigger with every day that goes
In voice, in look, in gesture, in Oh so many ways
A love that will not falter until the end of days
