Everyone’s an expert now
They know what we should do
Telling us that they know how
That to their knowledge we must bow
And do as we’re told to
Just listen to their taunting tone
Criticise our choices
Which they carpingly bemoan,
And try to get us to disown,
Those hurtful, spiteful voices
With thoughtlessness they bring us low
We strive to shut them out
But who they are we do not know
Nor how to tell them where to go
With all the cant they spout
Demeaning words so hard to fight
Disparagement continues
How we are wrong and they are right
Intolerant, malicious spite
That strains at our mind’s sinews
And there are voices deep inside
One strong, one full of doubt
One positive that says, “Have pride”
“The good in You can’t be denied”
“They cannot drown it out”
The one that takes the upbeat view
Is strong and full of fight
And says “You know that can’t be true”
“You can’t believe what’s said to You”
“You know that isn’t right”
But still that other voice is there
The one that’s full of dread
That sees the future stark and bare
That knows there’s no one there to care
Insisting hope is dead
That says, “You’re safe when You’re alone”
“No matter what is said”
“For You can use the telephone”
“To talk and still be on your own”
“Alone inside your head”
That dismal voice! It makes us frown
Brings doubt to all we do
As it strives to drag us down
And in self–pity, see us drown
No hope worth clinging to
Don’t listen to that sombre sound
That comes from deep within
In empty space it echoes round
Has answers that cannot be found
With nowhere to begin
Don’t listen to that inner voice,
Weigh what it says to you
For it will never say rejoice
But criticise your every choice
Decrying what you do
Beware! beware! it isn’t right
That voice! It isn’t you
Repeating things you cannot fight
Things you’ve heard or dreamt at night
And none of it is true
