Trauma Survived

The past impinges on the now
Bringing back old pain
Re-awaking what has gone
To make it hurt again
Though what is gone may be ignored
Attention be diverted
We know that it has never healed
The hurt has not deserted
It sits and waits and bides its time
But where we cannot figure
We do not see it hiding there
Just waiting for a trigger
And then it takes us by surprise
Unanticipated
By panic, fear and nervousness
Incapacitated
The hurt, the pain, the wounds unhealed
Old sores that fester still
Cannot be ignored or cured
By any act of will
Someday, maybe, we’ll let them out
Expunge them from our soul
To one day have them cut right out
May be our long term goal
But until that day should come
When we may find release
We will have to struggle on
With pain that will not cease
