The Cup Runneth Over

Each of us, we have a place, deep within our hearts
A container, full of love, at least that’s how it starts
A fragile thing, so delicate, we have to keep it safe
And yet we must not tie it down, for ropes can rub and chafe

When we’re born our cup is full, with love up to the brim
Although the odds to keep it so are very, very slim
Because  the top is open wide and fluid moves about
As we travel down the road of life some will spill out

The more we’re hurt, the more we’ll lose, of what we keep inside
Each pot hole on the bumpy road of life we try to ride
But still we find the damage done, a spill, perhaps a leak
A little dent, a damaged seam where stress has made it weak

When our cup is fully filled with love up to the top
Then we feel the happiness will never ever stop
But now we’re getting older, some love’s gone from the cup
And so we have to shake it hard, to make what’s left froth up

Excited then the love expands to fill it as before
As long as we keep stirring it, keep shaking more and more
But when the stimulation stops, the contents settle down
And life that once seemed coloured bright, now turns a sombre brown

So as the time is passing by, we can no longer shirk
If we would still feel happiness, we must get down to work
And we must try to stop the leaks, to mend the failing parts
Though this may seem impossible, this healing broken hearts

We know we must refill the cup, replace the love we’ve lost
We’re certain that we have to try, however much the cost
For if we should neglect it now and leave the level low
Then we would have lost the fight, life’s energy would go

So tell me now where can we find the love to make it right
The love to share – the answers there! We have to share the fight!
To find someone who will love us, the way that we love them
And so by working hand in hand, fill both cups up again

For we will make a direct link, connecting them together
Permanent, and set in stone, a love to last forever
We have to mend the broken parts, to make a good repair
And let our hearts hold love again, not empty cold despair

The love from each will fuse and grow, and fill them both as one
Until depressions emptiness, that formless void is gone
For this we must be open, not hide ourselves away
If we can make the effort last, things will improve one day

For we were not designed to cope, to struggle on alone
To try and take life’s hardest knocks and do it on our own
No, love that’s shared will build us up, will smooth life’s rugged road
Will make Our Cups Run Over too, when we can share the load!
