Mists

What are these mists that swirl around
That hide the sky, and cloak the ground?
What we could see they now obscure
And now we doubt what once was sure

When we are young then we can see
From where we stand, infinity
And everything is crystal clear
From far away to very near

At first we’re seeing all that passes
But as we age we’re needing glasses
And what we feel then takes its toll
And in the mists begin to roll

There’s nothing here to shew the way
And yet we know we cannot stay
As if fog bound upon a heath
With naught but heather underneath

Lost in limbo all alone
No radio, no telephone
No friend to help, no one to care
We’re all alone, there’s no one there

The mists roll in like some grey pall
They cloak the land, they hide it all
We can’t remember what we’ve seen
We cannot tell where we have been

Why all this fog where once was clear?
What does it mean? Why are we here?
Trapped in this mist, how can we know?
When we are lost which way to go?

Then people come from out the mist
Telling us that ways exist
And every one is sure which way
And every one will have their say

But none of them will say the same
Though they all say that we’re to blame
For we don’t know just where we are
Which way to go, nor yet how far

And still we have to find our way
For we can’t follow what they say
We have to search, to find the light
To see, for us, which way is right

One voice stands out from all the rest
And what it says is “Do your best”
It doesn’t say “You’re right”, “You’re wrong”
But, “Carry on, you can be strong”

“Where e’er you go, what e’er you do
Just remember you are You
You must, yourself, your life reprise
Don’t try to live through other’s eyes”

“For they will tell you what to do
Knowing themselves, do they know you?”
So listen to that inner voice
Prompting you to make your choice

That inner voice is your own heart
Still guiding you as from the start
But yet the mists swirl all around
They hide the sky, they cloak the ground

We’ve always known we have to try
To find a map to steer by
So look inside, your map is there
You have your own, you needn’t share

It maps your life, where you have been
And it records what you have seen
So keep it safe what e’er you do
It’s your Life Map, it’s there for you

Yes, each of us, we have our own
We’ve built it up, as we have grown
And we have used what we have found
To mark our way; to plot the ground

When we find out something new
We add more detail to our view
Correcting as we go along
Where we find we’ve got it wrong

So now we’ve found our one true guide
That’s long been hidden deep inside
And do not heed what others say
We don’t need them to see our way
