Memories

Memories that haven’t been
Of places we have never seen
Of things we knew that never were
That once were clear, now fade and blur

Memories of future past
A future that could never last
Time has rubbed it out because
It’s what will be and not what was

“The past is gone!” is no defence
Remember in the future tense
The pain that was, it haunts us still
It shackles us and always will

In empty halls where there’s no sound
Memories echo around
Pictures of an unseen face
In an imaginary space

Echoing and dusty vaults
Empty yet crammed full of faults
Memories of what was wrong
That don’t exist but last so long

The empty spaces of my mind
Where memories of hopes unwind
False echoes of what might have been
The memories of sights unseen

Our memories that seem so sure
Should reflect what’s gone before
But what about the empty spaces
Forgotten sounds, events and places

What can’t exist and never will
Is something we remember still
What never was and could not be
Refreshes our false memory

We may recall what we forgot
Or maybe know that we do not
But if, by chance, it’s really gone
We’ve no peg left to hang it on
