Life Goes On

Do you know I fell? Or so I have been told
I don’t remember well what happened in the cold
Damp and grey, a winter’s day. Not much snow about
And so we went to climb on rocks and left our crampons out
I remember where we parked and climbing up the track
Following the stream, the valley at our back
Snow field across our path with which we had to cope
Dave and Phil made steps. I followed up the slope
I don’t remember now, what we went to climb
We found it, had some snap and then we changed our minds
Rain within the wind. The rock was cold and wet
Fort William swimming pool, seemed a better bet

And so we started down. Helmet in my sack
Ice axe in my hand. Rucksack on my back
Arriving at the snow. Phil and Dave ahead
I made a cigarette, and then woke up in bed
Later I recalled, sliding on the snow
All was red and white, but vague and oh so slow!
Water in a stream, rushing in a pool
Was like the sound of snow under my cagoule
And again, but later, an image of the fall
Suspended out in space, at last I did recall
Rock behind my head. Nothing in the way
Knowing it will hurt. It’s with me every day

Waking up one day. Knowing time had passed
Now I could recall, consciousness at last
Standing on the floor, walking from the bed
But I couldn’t stop unless I thought ahead
In hospital? That’s right, someone must have said
And they’d taken out the stitches in my head
One thing I knew for sure, everything had changed
The world was different now. My brain was rearranged
People rallied round, they tried to help I know
